7 Laundry Hacks That Save You Time, Money, and Your Favourite Clothes

Laundry day doesn't have to be a battle. A few small changes to how you wash, dry, and store your clothes can save you hours each month, cut your water and electricity bills, and keep your favourite outfits looking newer for longer. Here are seven tips our team swears by.

  • Sort smarter, not just by colour. Separate by fabric weight and care label, not just light versus dark — towels and denim rough up delicate fabrics in the drum, and heavy items take longer to dry, leaving lighter pieces sitting around damp.

  • Cold water is your best friend. Modern detergents are built for cold washes, and cold water protects colour, elastic, and delicate fibres while using far less electricity than a hot cycle. Save hot water for genuinely soiled loads like gym kit or bedding during flu season.

  • Treat stains the moment they happen. Blot, don't rub, and rinse with cold water from the back of the fabric as soon as possible. Heat sets protein stains like blood and sweat, so never pop a stained item straight into a hot dryer. If it's already dried in, soak overnight before washing.

  • Don't overload the machine. A packed drum can't agitate properly, so clothes come out with detergent residue still trapped in the fibres. Leave enough room for items to move freely — roughly a fist-width of space at the top of the drum — for a cleaner wash with less rewashing.

  • Air-dry whenever you can. Tumble drying is convenient, but it's the single biggest cause of shrinkage, fading, and worn-out elastic. Line-drying or using a rack, especially in Johannesburg's dry highveld air, saves electricity and adds years to your clothes. Save the dryer for towels and bedding where softness matters more than longevity.

  • Give your machine some love too. Run an empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar once a month to clear detergent build-up and odours, wipe the rubber door seal dry after each load to stop mould, and leave the door cracked open between washes so it can air out.

  • Know when to hand it over to the pros. Duvets, curtains, delicate fabrics, and anything with a stubborn set-in stain are often better off with a proper wash and press than a squeeze into a home machine that isn't built for the load.

If you'd rather skip the hassle altogether, Quick Laundry offers pickup and delivery across sandton, so you can build these habits into your week and let us handle the heavy lifting.
